My name is Karen Whittenburg, and I am an Intellectual Property paralegal. I have continuously performed IP work since 1994. My expertise is in domestic and global patent and trademark matters. I have worked in many disciplines, including law firms, chemical companies, satellite technology and the retail clothing industry. I started my IP career as a Patent Secretary, became a Patent Assistant, expanded my expertise to become an IP Docket Clerk, and have settled happily into my IP Paralegal function. During my career, I have focused primarily on IP prosecution matters. I have, over the years, expanded my practice to also perform trademark name clearance searches, conduct patent monitoring and manage IP litigation discovery. In the course of my career, I have gained extensive expertise in gathering first use evidence and assisting local counsel in opposition proceedings, invalidation actions and cancellation matters. I have performed numerous file transfers for client acquisitions, and have managed portfolios from a hundred matters to portfolios with tens of thousands of matters.
When I first began practicing, e-filing was unheard of in the IP world. As times changed, I have created and implemented e-solutions to a formerly paper-only world. I have evolved my paralegal practice to create an e-office with the best and most current telecommuting technologies so as to successfully manage both nationwide and global IP portfolios for clients in various locations. I have successfully operated my contract paralegal business since 2009, mixing an e-office telecommuting environment with face-to-face client visits to create a comfortable, professional and efficient working relationship with my clients. I believe in flexible invoicing solutions, so I work on both hourly and flat-fee structures -- my clients choose what structure works best for them. I also train my clients in various aspects of searching and monitoring, so that my clients can be more independent and educated in their IP experience.
